Star signs. A classic eye roll subject. How can something so out of your control define your personality? More importantly, how do so many people believe in this so heavily and act accordingly? I must note that I do understand that horoscopes are so much more than the mainstream sun signs we read about in magazines, there are so many layers to this subject and how we can find individual clarity within it.

There is a commonly held belief that horoscopes are for the ‘gullible and ‘naive’ but is there any truth to it? And how does this relate to dating? A common trend coming to light more recently seen on dating apps recently is people stating their star sign in their bios on their dating profiles.

Your sun sign is determined by your birthday, literally where the sun is at your time of birth, and represents your core personality. The most common technique to determine compatibility is based on the element. You are always best matched with another fire, earth, air, or water sign. Another approach is to consider your opposite sign (the sign that occurs during your half-birthday). While opposite sign matches can often have a bit of an odd-couple vibe, the counterbalance within these pairs makes for some of the most dynamic duos.

Bumble has noticed this rising trend and has taken matters into their own hands and have even hired an in-house astrologer. The app introduced the Astro-filter last year and Bumble says it has since become the most-used filter, allowing swipers to whittle down potential matches based on their star sign . All of which has been reported in the media with varying degrees of side-eye.

Haters cynically joke, “Ha look at these idiots who love star signs even though there’s no scientific proof they’re real,” as though dating based on astrological compatibility is somehow more ridiculous than dating based on how someone looks in three carefully selected pictures and a 30-word bio.

Whilst I am no astrologer and do not claim to be, I will instead take a look at the opinion of those when it comes to horoscopes and dating. I gathered a few comments from my fellow Redditors and they shared the following.

“Putting your horoscope on your profile comes off as tone-deaf. Most men don’t know what ‘rising libra’ or ‘cancer moon’ means and have no motivation to ask. We know it’s a horoscope thing but that’s about it. So if you’re putting that with the intention of men seeing it, you’re showing that you’re out of touch with what men pay attention to.”

“No Karen, you aren’t acting this way because you’re a Scorpio, you’re just a b*tch”

“Racism but with birthdays.”

A horoscope dating app has even been created, NUiT. NUiT is a mobile app that matches and connects people through astrology and natal chart compatibility. All you need to do is to create your profile by filling in your birth details. NUiT App will then translate your birth details into your cosmic personality traits, give you personalized astrological information for deeper self-understanding and empower you with the tools to discover & meet new like-minded people.

Another Reddit user claimed “I love NUIT! It’s amazing even as just an astrology app, they hire actual astrologers which I respect rather than AI like Co-star, and the matching component is fascinating.”

So can we really trust horoscopes when it comes to dating?

Yes and no. On the one hand, zodiac signs may offer glimpses into a person’s basic human nature, personality traits, impulses, interests, etc. Most often, people will relate to their weekly horoscopes, no matter how strongly they believe in them. They can help us identify which areas of our lives are stable, and which ones are in need of improvement. Zodiac signs are also an indicator of our “love health”, single and married folks alike, helping us find patterns and guiding us towards happiness and fulfilment.

On the other hand, judging someone based purely on their astrological sign is never advised, much less so when it comes to finding a love partner. A lot of people mistake astrology as a factual, infallible science; in truth, it is merely but a field of interpretations based on celestial observations. You might find that you have great chemistry with someone with whom you wouldn’t technically “match”. Inversely, it isn’t rare for astrologically compatible couples to experience disastrous relationships.

As creatures who will never stop looking for love, we always want to find a way to tell us more about who we may be compatible with. At the end of the day, your zodiac sign can indeed enlighten you on several aspects of life, from health to finances. Although, when it comes to love, your personal engagement, commitment, and faithfulness will go a much longer way in helping you find a partner or making your relationship last through time. Remember that astrology and synastry hold as much power as you place trust and belief in them. They may put you on the right path to experience a truly fulfilling relationship, but it’s never wise to rely entirely on them for matters as sensitive as love, marriage, and romantic involvement.
